Ennio Morricone (Rome, 10 November 1928) is an Italian composer, musician, conductor and arranger. He studied at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, in Rome, where he graduated in trumpet; he has written the music for more than 500 films and TV series, [2] as well as works of contemporary music. His career includes a wide range of compositional genres, making him one of the most versatile, prolific and influential soundtrack composers of all time. [3] Morricone’s music has been used in over 60 award-winning films. As a young arranger of RCA, he also contributed to shaping the sound of the Italian Sixties, creating songs such as Sapore di sale, Se telefando, and the successes of Edoardo Vianello.
From 1946 to today he has composed more than 100 classical pieces, but what gave Morricone his worldwide fame as a composer, were the music produced for the Italian western genre, which led him to collaborate with directors such as Sergio Leone , Duccio Tessari and Sergio Corbucci, with titles such as the Dollar Trilogy, A Gun for Ringo, The Showdown, The Great Silence, The Mercenary, My Name is Nobody and the Time Trilogy.
From the seventies Morricone became a prominent name also in Hollywood cinema, composing music for American directors such as John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, Barry Levinson, Mike Nichols, Oliver Stone and Quentin Tarantino. Morricone has written the music for numerous Academy Award nominated films such as Days of Heaven, Mission and The Untouchables.
In 2007 Morricone received the Honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement [4] “for his magnificent contributions to the art of film music” after being nominated five times between 1979 and 2001 without ever having received the award. [5 ]
On February 26, 2016, he was awarded star number 2574 on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
On February 28, 2016, he received his second Oscar for the scores on Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, [6] for which he also won the Golden Globe. [7]
In 2016, in collaboration with Alessandro De Rosa, the autobiography “Chasing that sound” [8] was published.
Morricone has also won three Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, ten David di Donatello, eleven Nastri d’Argento, two European Film Awards, a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement and a Polar Music Prize.
Ennio Morricone is an Effective Academic of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia and a member of the Nuova Consonanza association engaged in Italy in the diffusion and production of contemporary music.

On 27 December 2017 he received the honor of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic [10], the second degree in order of importance.
Originally from Arpino in the province of Frosinone, but born in Rome, son of Mario Morricone and Libera Ridolfi. He has two brothers, Adriano and Aldo, and two sisters, Maria and Franca. The father was a trumpet player who worked with several orchestras, while the mother had a small textile industry.
The young Ennio studied music at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he graduated in trumpet (7/10), band instrumentation (9/10) with the maestro Antonio D’Elia, and composition (9.50 / 10) with professor Goffredo Petrassi. [Citation needed] Later he completed his training also studying choral music and choir conducting.
After graduating, he began playing as a trumpet player in various Roman orchestras, creating a network of acquaintances in the world of entertainment. In 1955 he began to write music for films, and at the same time he worked as an arranger of light music for orchestras and for the RCA Italiana record company, whose artistic director Vincenzo Micocci commissioned him the arrangements of songs by Italian artists, which almost all became great hits. , also working with musicians such as Paul Anka, Chet Baker and Mina, but not neglecting the composition of classical music.
In 1956 he married Maria Travia: four children were born from the marriage: (Marco; Alessandra; Andrea, musician; and Giovanni, director and screenwriter). In 1958 he was hired as a musical assistant by Rai, but resigned the first day of work, as soon as he learned that he would be precluded from any career possibility and that, by the will of the general manager Filiberto Guala, the music he composed, as an employee of the public broadcasting body, will not be broadcast.
In 1962 he arranged the first success of Edoardo Vianello, the single Pinne rifle ed Occhiali / Guarda come dondolo, which will be followed by Abbronzatissima and O mio Signore (1963), Hully gully in 10 / Sul cucuzzolo (1964). In 1963 he arranged Sapore di sale by Gino Paoli. In 1966, together with Ghigo De Chiara and Maurizio Costanzo (authors of the text) he composes and arranges “If by telephone”, one of the most famous successes of Mina’s career.

From 1964 he joined the Nuova Consonanza Improvisation Group, a group of composers founded a few years earlier by Franco Evangelisti, with whom Morricone played and recorded albums until 1980. The ensemble, which mainly dealt with avant-garde music and of free improvisation, he aimed to research new musical methods in the field of improvisation.
